James G. Mengel, 76, of Shoemakersville, passed away in Lehigh Valley Medical Center Cedarcrest on Wednesday morning.
Born in Jalappa on August 27, 1940, he was the son of Mabel (Seyfert) and J. Stanley Mengel.
He attended Hamburg High School and was a member of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shoemakersville.
James was a plumber with local 690 of Philadelphia, where he started his career in 1960 and retired in 1999.
He was a charter member of the Shoemakersville Lions Club, Vaux Lodge Mason and the American Auto Club.
James especially enjoyed spending time with his family and his many friends. In his spare time, he restored and remodeled stone farmhouses, gardening, antique cars and antiquing with his wife.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Yeager), in October 2014, and to whom he was married 54 years; brothers, Donald and Harold; and a sister, Jean Miller.
James is survived by his sons: Steven C. Mengel, husband of Arlene F., of Hamburg; Brian J. Mengel, husband of Tracy L., of Kutztown; Chris A. Mengel, husband of Karen L., of Mohrsville; grandchildren: Cathleen, Shelby, Madison, Kyleigh, Heather and Luke; great-granddaughters, Graceann and Addilynn; brothers, Richard and Terry Mengel; sisters: Shirley Herring, Joan Miller, Barbara Savage and Linda Weitzel.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 3rd, at 11:00 a.m. in Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 354 Zion's Church Rd., Shoemakersville, with Rev. Bruce Osterhout officiating. A viewing will be held from 9-11:00 a.m. in the church. Interment will follow in Zion's Cemetery, Windsor Castle.
