"We remember the only member of the Gruber family to not go into wagon making, Levi Franklin Gruber.
Franklin H. Gruber founded the Gruber Wagon Works in 1882 and eventually four of his five sons continued the family business into the 20th century. However, the youngest son, Levi forged a different path as a Lutheran minister.
Levi F. Gruber (1870-1941) attended Kutztown State Normal School now Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, before he went on to earn a degree in theology from Muhlenberg College. He later served as the president of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois from 1926 to 1941. While president, Levi collected nearly 300 books and manuscripts from the 15th to 18th centuries still preserved today at the Lutheran Theological Seminary and is known as the Levi Gruber Collection. Seen in the photograph are a four of the Gruber brothers in 1929 with the Wagon Works visible in the background. From left to right: Levi, George, Jacob, and John".
