Joseph R. Speece Sr., 85, Muhlenberg Township, formerly of Reading, died June 27, 2008, at 6:24 p.m. peacefully with his family present in Reading Hospital, where he was a patient since June 19.
He was the widower of Katherine A. (Hildebrant) Speece, who died in 2003.
Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Lyvan and Anna (Ketterer) Speece.
He was employed by Parish Structural Products Division of Dana Corp. in the maintenance department for 32 years until retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the First Church of the Brethren, Wyomissing Hills.
Speece was a veteran of the Army, serving during World War II.
He was a lifetime member of the 14th Ward Republican Club.
Speece enjoyed his Wednesdays at the Leesport Farmers Market with Pinky, John and Wayne. He also liked baby-sitting his grandchildren.
Surviving are a son, Joseph R. Speece Jr., and wife, Linda S., Sinking Spring; and three daughters: Sharon K. Speece, with whom he resided, and Pennylyn I., wife of John D. Winand Sr., both of Muhlenberg Township; and Patricia A., wife of Wayne E. Rahn, West Lawn.
Other survivors include two sisters, Irene Schmidt, Northmont; and Janet Fenstermacher, Greenfields.
There are also eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by five brothers: Arthur, Raymond, Henry B., Robert and Carl; four sisters: Marie Bressler, Theresa Powell, Anna Barth, Cathryn Wenrich; and a great-great-grandson, Ryan W. Calm.
Memorial services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Cramp Funeral Home Inc., 934 Centre Ave., Reading. Inurnment will be in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading.
