He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Lois Heck Batteiger.
He was a lifelong resident of Coatesville, graduating from S. Horace Scott Senior High School in 1934. He graduated from Pennsylvania Military Academy (Widener College) in Chester.
Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a captain in the 33rd Infantry Division. He received the Bronze Star for heroism in action against the Japanese in Northern Luzon. Upon discharge from the Army, he started the Coatesville Plate Washer Co, in Rock Run.
He devoted most of his life to making Coatesville a better place by serving in many capacities. He served on the Coatesville Area School Board for 28 years and was board president for 22 of those years. During that time he oversaw the formation of the historic consolidation of the Coatesville Area School District.
He was on the board of the National Bank of Chester Valley and later served on the board of directors of Provident National Bank in Philadelphia, which became PNC. In addition, he served for 50 years at the Coatesville Savings Bank. During this time he acted as bank president and was chairman of the board until 2004.

Other organizations of which he was a member included the Lions Club of Coatesville, past president; Rotary Club of Coatesville; the Coatesville Country Club, past president; and he was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Trinity, Coatesville, serving for many years as treasurer and on the vestry. He was also a member of the Coatesville Hall of Fame.
Some of his hobbies were tennis, golf, hosting the Batteiger tournament at the Coatesville Country Club for many years, and being a life-long Phillies and Eagles fan. He had a special love for magic and performed for countless children and adults all over Chester County.
William was the son of Rufus L. and Stella Maderia Batteiger, and was predeceased by his sister, Katherine B. Fitzgerald.
His greatest joy was his loving family, which includes two daughters, Priscilla Howe and husband Stephen, and Miranda Croft and husband Carl. He was very proud of his four grandchildren: Skip Wells and wife Treacy, Kimberly Dufresne and husband Bruce, William Croft and wife Christine, and Elizabeth Fazio and husband Michael. He also enjoyed his four great-grandchildren.
