Merryl Rentschler, 87, of Moravian Hall Square, Nazareth, died December 28, 2004 in Easton Hospital. Born December 8, 1917 in Hamburg, he was a son of the late Gloss Seiders and Valleria Missouri Rentschler Seiders. Following his mothers death in 1925, he was adopted and raised by his grandparents, the late James and Laura (Balthaser) Rentschler. His wife, the former Pearl Rice, died in 1989. He graduated from Hamburg High School, class of 1935, earned a bachelors degree in library science from Kutztown University and masters degrees from both the University of Denver and Columbia University. Merryl retired in 1976 from the Easton Area School District, where he was employed for 28 years as a librarian at the junior and senior high schools. From 1935-1945, he was employed by Hamburg Knitting Mills. During World War II, he was actively engaged in home front activities as an Air Raid Warden, participating in scrap drives and selling defense bonds. He served in the Army Air Corps Ground Observer Corps as an assistant-chief observer and taught aircraft identification classes. He was a member of Nazareth Moravian Church. Merryl was a past master and a more than 50-year member of Vaux Masonic Lodge 406, Hamburg and a member of various York Rite Masonic Bodies in Reading, Allentown and Easton, most recently Excelsior Royal Arch, Chapter 237; Pomp Council 20, Royal and Select Masons; and Hugh de Payens Commandery 19, Knights Templar. He was a life member of Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Foundation at Kutztown University; the American Library Association; the Association of Young Peoples Librarians; the New York and Pennsylvania Library Associations; Lehigh Valley District Library Association; the National Education Association; Pennsylvania State Education Association and Easton Teachers Association.
Survivors: Nieces, nephews; cousins.
Services: 1 p.m. Friday in Moravian Hall Square Chapel, 175 W. North Street, Nazareth. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Nazareth Moravian Church Cemetery. The Strunk Funeral Home Inc., 2101 Northampton St., Wilson, is in charge of arrangements.
