DEATH OF CAPTAIN SAMUEL A. HAINES, Wounded in the Civil War - Passes Away at the Advanced Age of 80 Years and 10 Months.
Reading, PA - February 1, 1908, Captain Samuel A. Haines, whose military record was very enviable, passed away shortly after 6 o'clock, Friday evening, at his home in West Leesport, aged 80 years, 10 months, and 21 days. Death was due to paralysis from which he had been suffering for the past year. He was bedfast five days.
When the Civil War broke out Mr. Haines enlisted and was assigned to Co. "D", One Hundred and Sixty-seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. His service began November 6, 1862, and he was honorably discharged February 27, 1863. He was severely wounded while skirmishing and was promoted to the rank of Captain early in the war for bravery.
After his return from the war he resided on a farm in Perry Township for some years. He then moved to Bern Township, where he farmed for 17 years. Ten years ago he retired and moved to West Leesport.
Mr. and Mrs. Haines celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 3, 1907. They were surrounded by all their children and grandchildren and Mr. Haines was the life of the family gathering.
Deceased was a member of the Lutheran congregation of Gernant's Church and Keim Post No. 76, G.A.R.
Besides his widow, Amanda (nee Buck), deceased is survived by seven sons, Oscar, Samuel, William, Frank, John and George Haines, all of this city, and Llewellyn Haines, at home; one daughter, Mary Haines, of this city, and 14 grandchildren. Another daughter, Sallie, preceded her father in death.
