Bruce L. Heckler, 81, of Reading, died January 25, 2015 at 2:38 a.m. in his residence with his family by his side.
He was the husband of Fay D. (Wells) Degler Heckler. They would have been married 13 years in February.
Born in Shillington, he was a son of the late Leon E. and Reida V. (Miller) Heckler.
Bruce was a 1951 graduate of Shillington High, where he and his wife were classmates.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. After the Service, he started as a sign painter for Roy Klein Signs, Reading. While employed there, he hand painted the original Boehringer's Ice Cream sign. Bruce ran a home-based radio repair business, where he also built a few radios. He later became the Maytag Repairman for Beam Appliances, Shillington. After retirement he worked part-time for Weis Markets and for the Reading Phillies in concessions.
He was a faithful attender of Calvary Baptist Church where he assisted with vacation Bible school, the Easter egg hunt and Noble St. Christmas.
Bruce's first love was flying, his second was radio. He was a life member of the Golden Age Air Museum, Experimental Aircraft Assn., Chapter 321, where he built and flew his own gyro-copter. He was also a member of the Reading Radio Club using the call sign, K3MEM. During high school he had his own radio station, WBHM. He enjoyed building and flying model planes, camping at Red Run Campground and listening to hymns, gospel and blue grass music; his favorite song being "I'll Fly Away." Bruce served on the board of Wyomissing Cemetery. He loved to go out to eat with his friends and could be found at Roger's Garage in Mohnton.
