Jacob "Jake" Somers, Mechanicsville, left to be with Our Lord Saturday at Pottsville Hospital after a long and heroic battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Born in Schuylkill Haven, March 28, 1926, he was a son of the late Edna Berger Laughran and Jacob H. Somers Sr.
Jake was of the Protestant faith and attended Pottsville area schools before entering into the Merchant Marines. During World War II, his crew was involved in transporting our troops to the Normandy invasion and many other missions.
In his younger years, he was employed as a sign painter working for a company in Reading and his work could be seen throughout Schuylkill and Berks counties. His talent and love of art carried through his life. He was a lifetime member of Allied Artists with his works being shown in many of their art shows. He loved painting portraits and landscapes. Many homes are blessed with his work.
His love of music brought him great joy. He taught himself to play the organ and had many pleasurable hours playing and entertaining family and his many friends.
Along with his love of family, art and music, he had a passion for cars. He was the owner of Jake's Auto Sales until his retirement in 1988. He loved auto racing and helped his nephews in their quest by painting and lettering their race cars during the 1970's and 1980's at Schoentown and Big Diamond Race Tracks.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell, in 1979; two brothers, Howard, in 1973, and Bill, in 1997; a sister, Mary Brennan, in 1994.
