Joseph G. Berger, 93, of Weatherly and formerly of Drums, passed away on Thursday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Hazleton. Born in Hazleton on June 8th 1923, he was a son of the late Joseph J. and Margretta K. (Karn) Berger. He lived in Drums until moving to Weatherly and sharing a home with his brother Richard.
Joseph was a 1941 graduate of Hazleton High School and an Army veteran of WWII. He continued his education, attending NYA Trade School in Lancaster where he studied machine shop basics, and later earned a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering at Penn State University. Until his retirement, Mr. Berger was employed as an engineer at the Tobyhanna Army Depot. Joseph was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in Saint Johns. In his leisure, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Arthur and Bruce, and a sister Clara Gill. Surviving are his brothers, Richard C. Berger with whom he resided, Nelson Berger and his wife Shirley of Sugarloaf, and George Berger and his wife Cora of Drums; sister, Helena Tanner of Niagara Falls, NY; as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends. Joseph's funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM at the Butler Chapel of Krapf & Hughes Funeral Home, 530 W. Butler Drive in Drums, where Rev.
Joseph Healey will preside. Interment will follow in the Saint Johns Lutheran and UCC Cemetery. Friends may call at the Butler Chapel on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 PM.
