Edward Burnett Ambler was born in Salt Lake City on Jan. 9, 1920, to James Burnett Ambler and Janet Williamson Ambler. He died of congestive heart failure and Alzheimer's complications in Denver at the age of 91.
The family moved to Nevada during the Depression when his father was diagnosed with tuberculosis. They moved to Denver in 1930. He went to the Colorado School of Mines and worked briefly in the gold mines at Ophir, Colorado.
After Pearl Harbor, he went to work at Boeing Aeronautics as an aeronautical draftsman. In 1942 he joined the Army and served in combat in Europe until the end of World War II.
He married his first wife, Jessie Barnett, in 1947, and they raised three children, Marjane, Rebecca, and Steve in Englewood, Colo. In 1948, he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Denver. He took over his family's business selling water and sewer equipment. In 1964, he merged the Ambler Company with Control Sales, Inc. in Denver.
After his divorce, he married Sue Mae Parsons Atencio in 1972 in Denver. In 1977, they moved to Riverton, Wyo., where he established the Ed Ambler Co.
An avid outdoors man, Edward enjoyed downhill and cross country skiing, hunting, backpacking, horse packing, goat packing, canoeing, fishing, and gardening. In 1970 at the age of 50, he volunteered for the National Ski Patrol at Keystone and report-edly was the oldest rookie ski patrolman. He continued downhill skiing until he was 79. He and Sue took up snowmobiling when he was 64 years old.
Sue and Ed traveled to many parts of the world together, including China, Costa Rica, Mexico, Galapagos Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Italy, and New Caledonia. After their retirement, they spent many winters enjoying family and friends in Green Valley, Arizona.
He belonged to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and was past chairman of the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Water Works Association. He also was active in the Rotary Club, The Elks, and the Sertoma Club.
He left as survivors his three children and their spouses Marjane Ambler and Terry Wehrman of Atlantic City, Wyo.; Rebecca Ambler Strouse and Gary Strouse of New Caledonia (South Pacific); Steve Ambler of Fraser, Colo.; his sister and spouse, Janet Ambler Carter and Frank Carter of Denver, Colo.; his son-in-law and spouse, Vince and Debra Atencio of Englewood, Colo.; four grandchildren: Sarah, Corinne and Julia Strouse of New Caledonia and Katie Ambler of Lake Oswego, Ore., and two great grandsons, Ethan Videault and Gordon Ambler.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gordon, his first wife Jessie Barnett Ambler, and his second wife Sue Parson Atencio Ambler.
A celebration of life will be held in Denver on Sunday, Sept. 25.
