Alison D. (Berger) Boor

Alfred Unger was a farmer until 1888, when the farm was sold at a public sale and the family moved to Emmaus so that their second son, Calvin, could attend high school. Their oldest son, Jacob, was the principal at Emmaus High School (then it was spelled—and pronounced--Emaus) at that time. Alfred was a skilled carpenter and made his living in that way after the farm was sold. The family still owns two wooden chests that he made for their move (I have one—Peggy another, I believe. The back of mine is marked “AM Unger Emaus PA). They returned to Strausstown after Calvin graduated, and Esther’s mother died, and provided a home for Esther’s father.

Besides their sons, they also had a daughter, born between the boys, who died young. Esther sold the house in Strausstown on Nov 14, 1919 for $2,100—it was a two story house on the south side of Main Street (bought for $2,000 in April 2, 1895). She died at Calvin’s home in West Lawn; her obituary details what kind of coffin was used (“a fine square-cornered oak casket…”) and how the remains were attired. Services were held at the house by Rev . J.W. Lazarus, and then at Zion’s by Rev. Ira Klick.
