Elaine D.A. Evans (Angstadt) born 10 August 1938 has died peacefully surrounded by her family on 10 April after a brave battle with lung cancer. Daughter of the late Harvey and Ruth Angstadt, Elaine was the third of ten children and the eldest girl which is probably why she was so bossy. She was a graduate of Muhlenberg High School (1956) and went on to be a wife to the late Gerald Evans and a mother to four children, Geraldine "Chip" Evans (St Albans, England), the late Gerald "Ditto" Evans Jr, Gretchen Levan (Hamburg, PA) and Geoffrey Evans (Alsace Township) before working for the Muhlenberg School District. She started out as a custodian and through her strong work ethic and impeccable standards, she worked her way up through the ranks to be Muhlenberg's first woman building supervisor, a post she held with pride until her retirement. Her children will remember her as being firm but fair (in most things) and by example taught them to keep open minds and grateful hearts. A woman who could be as fiercely protective as she was strict, they could rely on her to be their champion when the world seemed against them as well as put the boot to their backsides when they weren't performing as expected. She welcomed and adopted her son and daughter in laws, Steven Levan, Jeffrey Crawford and Cathy Evans under the protective umbrella of her love. She had five grandchildren, Shelby Levan (Clarksville, TN), Petty Officer Third Class Bradley Levan (serving in the US Coast Guard, stationed in Kodiak, AK) Carly Levan (Hamburg, PA), Katharine Evans (St Albans, England) and Athena Evans (Fleetwood, PA) who would see her as Grammy, provider of cookies and snacks right before dinner (much to the outrage of their parents) and the best Dairy Queen in the world for providing a generous sundae bar afterwards. They will remember her secret stashes of candy as well as the enormous pride she had for each one of them simply because they were her grandchildren, the sunshine of her life. Besides her great love of her family, Elaine had a passion for lanterns and lighthouses. She was a voracious reader and a loyal fan of Nora Roberts. She did her share of globetrotting both domestically as far west as Washington State and internationally to Ireland, Scotland and England where she got hooked on British crime dramas. She was a life-long member of Rosedale United Church of Christ in Laureldale and remembered her days in the youth group with great fondness. Elaine is also survived by her sisters, Susan M. Brommer (Muhlenberg Township), Judith A. Moyer (Fleetwood, PA), Mary A. Sallada (Reading, PA) and Diane L. Choinere (Laureldale, PA) and one brother Paul A. Angstadt (Muhlenberg Township) and is predeceased by her mother and father Ruth E. and Harvey E. Angstadt, brothers, Harry E., W. David, and James A. Angstadt and sister Emmalou Angstadt. She also leaves behind a myriad of nieces and nephews all of whom held a special place in her heart. A Service of Thanksgiving for her life will be held at 11am on Friday 14 April at Rosedale United Church of Christ with visitation at 10am and followed by an interment of ashes at the cemetery of St Peter's Reformed UCC, Fleetwood.
