Nona Marie Beerbower, 94, Elma resident, died Sunday, March 6, 2016 at Montesano Health & Rehab Center in Montesano, Wash.
Nona was born on Feb. 9, 1922, in Ripley, Tenn. to Lester and Annie Marie (Johnson) Meacham. Soon after graduating from high school, Nona fell in love and married early. Life had other plans for Nona though. Her marriage ended and she found herself working in a post office in the middle of Alaska. As fate would have it, it was in this post office that she would eventually meet her soulmate, Virgil Beerbower. After months of small talk while he picked up his mail, Virgil won Nona over and convinced her to follow him to Washington, where they married on June 24, 1950. They eventually settled in Elma, Wash., where they would reside for the rest of their lives. In 1998, Virgil passed away and Nona spent her remaining years in the home they had built together.
Nona had a number of jobs throughout her life, from working in a Tennessee tire factory during WWII, to the post office in Alaska, to store manager at Downing?s Grocery Store in Elma, but her favorite job was hands down being a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Evident throughout her life, Nona loved to travel. After she and Virgil retired, the two of them traveled the world together as part of the senior travel group based in Hoquiam, Wash. She also enjoyed planting and pruning her numerous flower beds and rhododendron bushes. But most all, Nona loved just being around her family, especially her grandkids; although her beloved dog Casey is a close second.
Nona is survived by three sons: Tom (Donna) Summars of DeForest, Wisconsin, Ron (Sandy) Summars of Leesburg, Va. and Les (Kim) Beerbower of Elma; eight grandchildren: Jeff, Stacy, Tom Jr. and Allison Summars, Nic, Jacob, Lindsay and Brett Beerbower; and one great-grandson, Nathaniel. Nona was preceded in death by an infant son, Spencer Summars and her older sister, Anna Florence Mecham.
Nona was buried next to her husband, Virgil Beerbower in the McCleary Cemetery, in McCleary, Wash.
