William S. Corlett, 85, died Friday, July 6, 2007, at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, after a very brief illness. He died surrounded by his family.
He was born on Nov. 22, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was a World War II Navy combat veteran who served on destroyers in the Pacific.
Mr. Corlett was a lifelong professional forester who attended Case Western Reserve and received a bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Michigan. He retired from the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry after serving more than 35 years. Most of that time was spent as chief of Cooperative Forestry. He was an elected Fellow of the Society of American Foresters (SAF); past chairman of SAF's Pennsylvania Division and the five-state Allegheny Section; and long-time secretary of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association. He had also been named the Pennsylvania Forestry Association's 1997 Conservationist of the Year.
He had served on church councils of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Andersonburg, Perry County; Trinity Lutheran Church in Lemoyne; and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Camp Hill. He also taught Sunday school from 1950 until his death.
Mr. Corlett served as secretary of the Lemoyne Planning Commission for 15 years before being elected to borough council and its presidency in 1985. Also, he served for many years as chairman of the Lemoyne Shade Tree Commission.
A 33rd Degree Freemason, he was a Past Master of Lowther Manor Lodge No. 781 in Camp Hill; past district deputy Grand Master; a member of the Harrisburg Consistory Scottish Rite; the Zembo Shrine; and a long-time admissions counselor for the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was married for more than 63 years to his college sweetheart, Elsie R. (Beerbower) Corlett. She survives him, as do their seven children, Carol Howard, Nancy Kulchycki, Bill Corlett Jr., Mary Lou Higgs, David Corlett, Judi King and Bob Corlett. He was also blessed with many adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Known as a man of great faith, character, integrity and love, he will be deeply missed.
A memorial service for William Corlett will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2000 Chestnut St., Camp Hill. A visitation with the family is scheduled at 10 a.m., Saturday, prior to the service.
