Rev. Byard J. Ebling, 83, of Cumru Township, passed away January 17, 2018, in the Mifflin Center.
He was the loving husband of Nancy H. (Hillegass) Ebling, his childhood sweetheart, to whom he was married for 62 years.
Born in Lebanon, he was a son of the late C. Douglass and Irene (Wagner) Ebling-Paine. Rev. Ebling spent his childhood in Mohrsville and attended Reading High School. He continued his education at Muhlenberg College (Class of '57), received his Masters of Divinity from the Philadelphia Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Lutheran Pastor.
He started his career establishing a mission congregation and building a new church in Chatham, N.J., Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. He served congregations in Easton,
Hazleton and Pottsville before returning to his hometown of Reading. Here he served as Assistant to the Bishop of the Northeast Pennsylvania Synod ELCA. He worked with congregations in Schuylkill and Berks counties. After his time with the Bishops office, he returned to congregational work at several local churches.
After his retirement, Pastor Ebling was an active member of Advent Lutheran Church. He also was a long time Member of the Reading Choral Society, as well as serving on the Residents Board at The Heritage of Green Hills.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Byard T. Ebling, husband of Barbara M. Ebling, Newtown Square, and Andrew W. Ebling, Pottsville; one brother, Daniel Ebling, Bloomington, Indiana; six grandchildren: Kaley M. Ebling, Collin Ebling, Byard D. Ebling, husband of Noelle Ebling, Rebecca K. Ebling, Zoe M. Ebling and Amanda F. Murasko. He had one great-grandchild, Gianna J. Ebling.
Byard was predeceased by his brother, C. Douglas Ebling; and two daughters-in law, Kimberly J. Morgan-Ebling and Patricia Derbes-Ebling.
Services will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Advent Lutheran Church, 16 Telford Ave,, West Lawn, PA 19609. Burial will be at Good Shepherd Cemetery.
